Free training offered to parents of children with mental illness

National Alliance on Mental IllnessThe National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Marion and Crawford Counties will offer its no-cost Basics education program beginning October 20, 2015.

The 6-week course, taught by trained parents who have lived similar experiences with their own children, is geared toward parents and primary caregivers of children or adolescents experiencing mental illness.  It will be held on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Crawford-Marion ADAMH Board, 142 South Prospect Street, Marion.

The program provides practical insights that will help parents better understand and care for their child or adolescent living with mental illness, while taking care of their family and their own needs as well.

Classes cover the trauma of mental illness for the child and the family, getting an accurate diagnosis, the latest research on the medical aspects of the illness and advances in treatment, and an overview of the systems involved in caring for children and teens. The program and all training materials are provided free of charge to participants.

Registration is required, and classes fill up quickly.  For more information or to register for the course, contact Sharon Smith at (740) 251-7127 or Mick Smith at (740) 251-7182 or e-mail micksharon2@yahoo.com.
