Marion Elks Plan 41st Annual Hoop Shoot

ElksGrant Middle School gymnasiums will be the site for the 41st annual Marion Elks Hoop Shoot competition, to be held on Saturday, December 1st.  Registration will begin at 10:30 A.M., and the Hoop Shoot free throw shooting contest will begin at approximately 11:00 A.M.  The public can watch the event at no charge.

The Elks Hoop Shoot is a free-throw shooting competition open to all boys and girls, ages 8 through 13. All contestants will be winners of competition in their schools, and all public and private schools in Marion County have been invited to participate.  Interested contestants are encouraged to inquire about the preliminary Hoop Shoot competition at their school.

The “Hoop Shoot” contest is arranged in two divisions, one for boys and one for girls, in age categories 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Contestant age groups are determined by their ages as of April 1, 2013. In the 8-9 boys age division, the 28.5 boys basketball will be used in the competition. In the 10-11 and 12-13 age divisions, a regulation-size official basketball will be used. All girls’ age groups will use the girls regulation size basketball. Boys and girls in the 8-9-age category may shoot from a line four feet in front of the regulation foul line.

The six Marion Elks Champions, one boy and one girl in each age group, will advance to the North-Central District Hoop Shoot contest, to be held January 13, 2013 in Bellevue, OH. From there winners continue on to the state finals in February, 2013 in Columbus. State winners progress to the three-state Regional competition in March in Rochester, MI. The National Finals will be held in Massachusetts.

The local Marion Elks Lodge No. 32 was started in 1885, and is one of the oldest lodges in the country. It was the first lodge to be started in a non-metro area. President Warren G. Harding was a member of Marion Elks Lodge No. 32.  Visit http://elks.org/lodges/home.cfm?LodgeNumber=32 to learn more about the Marion Elks.
