County Transfers Several Roads to Marion Township

The Marion County Commissioners on Thursday, November 8, approved a request by the Marion County Engineer Brad Irons to transfer several county roads to the jurisdiction of Marion Township. A township trustee objected to a couple of the transfers saying they do not fit into their plowing schedule.

The roads being transferred were Waterworks Road, two sections of Fountain Street, Eastlawn Drive, and a portion of Phoenix Drive.

Dick Rassmussen, Marion Township Trustee, said while the trustees agree with two of the transfers, they believe that Eastlawn Drive and Phoenix Drive would be better served by remain county roads. He said the township mainly plows residential roads and the trustees are worried about being able to effectively plow the two commercial-area roads in a timely manner.

Irons told the Commissioners that he never wanted Eastlawn Drive and Phoenix Drive to be public roads. He said that the trustees said they would take responsibility for the roads at the time and should take responsibility now.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation rules, county roads should only include “through” roads. None of the roads transferred Thursday would be considered through roads.
