Dan Bailey’s 38-yard field goal gave the Dallas Cowboys a 23-20 overtime victory over the Cleveland Browns in Sunday’s game at Cowboys Stadium.
Both teams earned a stop on their first possession of overtime and then, the Cowboys marched 28 yards in seven plays for the game-winning score.
Earlier in the game, Bailey converted a 32-yard field goal and tied the score at 20 with two seconds remaining in Sunday’s game against the Browns.
The win evened the Cowboys’ at 5-5 heading into their Thanksgiving Day game against the Washington Redskins. The Browns dropped to 2-8 win the loss and return home for a matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday.
Prior to Bailey’s game-tying field goal, Browns tight end Benjamin Watson put the team back in front of the Cowboys, at 20-17, with a 17-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brandon Weeden with 1:07 remaining in regulation.
The one-play, 17-yard drive that took three seconds off the clock was set up by Joshua Cribbs’ 21-yard punt return and the subsequent 15-yard penalty on Dallas’ John Phillips for a horse collar tackle.
Earlier in the quarter, wide receiver Dez Bryant’s 28-yard touchdown reception gave the Cowboys their first lead of the day, at 17-13, over the Browns.
Down by three points when the Cowboys took possession of the football at the 11:57 mark of the fourth quarter, quarterback Tony Romo engineered a nine-play, 58-yard drive that took 5:11 off the clock.
The Cowboys had trailed the Browns since late in the first quarter, when Brandon Weeden threw a 10-yard touchdown to Watson.
Dallas running back Felix Jones scored a two-yard touchdown on a run behind right tackle and cut the Browns’ lead to 13-10 with 13:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
On first-and-goal from the two-yard line, quarterback Tony Romo took the snap and handed off to Jones, who followed the blockers and with a second effort, slipped through the Browns’ defenders and crossed the goal line. Jones has now rushed for a team-best three touchdowns this season.
The Browns held a 13-3 lead over the Cowboys after three quarters.
