Water Service Disrupted Around Marion

Water service was disrupted in and around the City of Marion Friday morning. Aqua Ohio officials say a water main break occurred on Fountain Street and caused the pressure to drop throughout the area. Once crews isolated the break at about 8:00am, pressure began to recover throughout the system.

There were still some homes near the break without water and they will remain without water until the break is repaired.

Marion Public Health says that while a boil alert was not immediately issued, they are advising the public to use only bottled water or an alternative, assured potable (safe) water supply for drinking, cooking and dish washing purposes. The affected public is encouraged to boil water for a minimum of one (1) minute if the water must be used in lieu of an alternate safe source.

The department advises retail food establishments and food service operations to follow their emergency contingency plan which should provide for use of single service tableware and an alternative safe water source (bottled water) for drinking, preparation of beverages and cooking purposes. Under no circumstance shall food nor food contact surfaces be washed with water from the public supply until cleared by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Dry cleaning methods may be employed in lieu of wet washing and the surfaces then disinfected prior to restoring to use. If the operation has not made such contingency arrangements, the operation must cease business until the water safety is confirmed.

The department will check with all affected operations to confirm safe practices until the water problems are resolved. Questions may be referred to the Health Department at 740-387-6520

The lack of water caused several schools and businesses to shut their doors. You can find the latest closings listed here.
