The Meeker Sportsman Club in western Marion County is offering the seminar “Self Defense Against Criminal Attack for School Employees” to Marion area teachers and school employees. The seminar is free to local school employees and pre-registration is required.
Class size is limited to (12) students to allow for individualized attention and plenty of practice repetitions of critical skills.
This seminar will be held from 10 AM – 3 PM (includes lunch break) on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 at the Meeker Sportsman Club, 1658 Agosta-Meeker Road North, Marion, OH 43302.
Seminar organizers say the recent school shootings have placed renewed emphasis on safety in educational environments and many organizations are choosing to take a more proactive stance. Safety training has always been a priority for schools, but many districts lack the expertise or funding to run these programs themselves. Many school safety plans incorporate lockdown drills, but few give instruction on what to do if you are confronted by an attacker face to face in the hallway.
Empowering school employees to react under extreme situations is the focus of this seminar, explained the Club’s Linda Tubbs. She stresses that this is not a firearms-based program, but rather a self-defense program that teaches school employees to defend themselves in their everyday work environment.
The seminar begins with an overview of research done on recent school attacks and the social violence phenomenon, including the psychology of perpetrators. Students will then learn basic self-defense stances and how to manage contacts with suspicious individuals. They will participate in partner drills where they will learn to block strikes and counter with defensive techniques. They will practice defenses against arm grabs, choke holds, and individuals armed with guns and knives. The approach taught for dealing with an assailant involves disrupting their thought process, which includes throwing objects and fighting back. Students will discuss optimizing the physical layout of their school for defensive purposes and learn how to use common, readily available items to protect themselves.
The four hour seminar was developed by Wayne Strunk, a local defensive tactics instructor who is also a former police officer. Strunk says that the Meeker Club supports outdoor recreational activities and occasional community events, including safety and firearms education.
