Marion Police Catch Burglar in the Act

Marion Police DepartmentThe Marion Police Department, with help from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, says they captured an alleged burglar in the act Sunday night after an alert neighbor called police.

Officers responded at 11:08pm on Sunday, March 10, 2013, to the 300 block of South Grand Avenue for a reported burglary in progress. A neighbor had heard glass breaking and called police.

When they arrived, officers say they found evidence that forced entry was made into the home and said they could hear voices coming from the basement. Other officers, along with a K-9 unit from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, also responded to assist.

The Sheriff’s K-9 unit and a police officer entered the home and said the suspect gave himself up when warned about the K-9 being used.

The suspect was identified as 26 year-old Kyle Pennington of Marion. Police say that Pennington told them that he broke in to steal copper and to sleep for the night because he is homeless.

Pennington was taken to the Multi-County Correctional Center on charges of Breaking and Entering and Possession of Criminal Tools. The case will be forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor for the filing of formal charges.

“The Marion Police Department would like to thank the alert neighbor for contacting the department,” said Lt. Matt Bayles.
