The Marion County Commissioners issued a proclamation Tuesday honoring Angela Carbetta for being named the 2013 ATHENA Award recipient by the Marion Women’s Business Council. Carbetta was announced as the winner on Monday from among six other nominees.
Carbetta works as the Director of Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention. The Commissioners in their proclamation commended her for her dedication, service and commitment to the citizens and community of Marion County.
Spreading the importance of recycling and the environment is Carbetta’s life mission and was displayed at the Commissioners’ meeting Tuesday morning. In accepting the proclamation, Carbetta chose to not speak about herself, but instead used the time to promote several upcoming environmental events including Earth Day activities.
Carbetta also spoke for the need to improve funding for environmental services in Ohio. She mentioned that local funding from the State of Ohio was cut by $2,000 this year and bemoaned the fact that recycling and litter prevention is no longer under the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
“It sickens me,” stated Carbetta referring to the program’s removal from of the State office who says their mission is to ensure “protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all.”
The prestigious award is presented annually to a woman who has been noted to excel in leadership and encouragement as well as participate in community service. This year’s nominees also included Winnie Brewer, Phyllis Butterworth, Carrie Hutchman, Jean Obenour, Tracy Rector, and Quiana Revere.
Past recipients of the ATHENA sculpture include Judge Tereas Ballinger, Trella Romine, Diane Watson, Tarina Rose, Kathy Masters, Vicki Wood, Sheryl Rhoades, Sandra Lepard, Elaine Merchant, Diane Glassmeyer, Anne Lowe, Karen Ream, Deb Rapert, Lori Litzenberg, and Lois Fisher.
