The community is invited to join a free public celebration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Ohio State University at Marion.
The celebration will feature a host of events for all ages: guest speakers, an eco-art display and sale, neighborhood clean-up, refreshments, door prizes, campus prairie nature center tours, free paper shredding, children’s games, vendors, and a scrap metal and aluminum can collection to benefit the Marion Area Humane Society. Residents are encouraged to bring scrap metal and cans to recycle. Lucky the Ladybug, Ohio’s First Lady of Litter Prevention, will be on campus after school until 7p.m. to meet children and pass out litter prevention activity books.
A detailed list of event times and locations is currently available on the campus website at: http://osumarion.osu.edu/earthday.
According to the Director of Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention, Angela Carbetta, The Ohio State University at Marion has historically been a strong community leader in promoting Earth Day and environmental stewardship in the community.
“I treasure this relationship with Ohio State Marion,” said Carbetta.
“The university offers a scientific standard for environmentalism and sustainability,” explained Carbetta. “I have been honored to work with Ohio State Professors Dr. Robert Klips and Dr. Richard Bradley, in addition to Emily Meyer of the Prairie Nature Center for the past ten years.
“They care about the earth and they know how to pass along that knowledge and passion,” she added.
“Ohio State Marion’s sustainability efforts are a model for the Marion community,” said Carbetta.
The Ohio State University at Marion will be publicly recognized as one of 15 Ohio State units across the state and the first ever Ohio State regional campus to receive the “Green Buckeye Certification” honor from The Ohio State University during a ceremony at 10:00 a.m. The Green Buckeye Certification recognizes university offices, departments, and faculty who incorporate sustainability into their actions and touches upon areas such as communication and education, energy efficiency and conservation, recycling and waste reduction, water conservation, and purchasing.
