During a drop off in 2012, Marion General Hospital Pharmacy Intern Megan Root checks medication with Deputy Williams to classify a medication that was collected.
Bring your expired or unused prescription and over-the-counter medications to The Medication Disposal Day at the Marion County Building on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 am 2:00 pm. You can drive through the rear parking lot at 222 West Center Street to conveniently drop off pills, liquids and creams.
No syringes will be accepted. Organizers say you can dispose of syringes by sealing them in a hard plastic container (coffee can or laundry soap bottle) and discard with your regular trash.
Law enforcement officers will dispose of the old medications in a safe, legal and environmentally-friendly manner. There is no cost and no questions will be asked. All containers will be recycled with identities protected.
“Don’t let your medication fall into the wrong hands,” pleaded Angela Carbetta, director of Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention. “Proper disposal helps prevent accidental overdoses, addiction, drug-related crime and water pollution.”
Carbetta cited the following statistics:
- Every day 2,500 teens use a prescription drug to get high for the first time.
- More people die in Ohio from unintentional medication poisoning than motor vehicle crashes.
- Traces of flushed medications are showing up in drinking water supplies.
