SADD Students Kick Off Global Youth Traffic Safety Month

saddOhio Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the state’s peer-to-peer prevention, education and activism organization, today gathered with state officials to Celebrate the national Click It or Ticket mobilization, calling on all Ohioans to wear their safety belt –  Every trip, Every time.

On Monday, SADD Students gathered at the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) to join with state officials to celebrate Global Youth Traffic Safety Month. Across the country, car crashes continue to be the number one killer of teens. Ohio is no exception to this tragic statistic; in fact, according to ODPS, 161 drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 were involved in fatal crashes on Ohio roadways in 2011. Seat-belt usage is a simple habit that can save a life.

“Today we call upon citizens across the state— teens, parents, neighbors and friends — to talk to the teens in their life about being smart drivers,” said Richard Birt, Director of Ohio SADD, “We believe the simple choice to buckle-up can save your life, and teens are the perfect advocate to convey this to their peers.”

May 20th is the national kick-off for Click It or Ticket. Today, over two hundred SADD chapters are conducting seat-belt activities in their schools and communities statewide. Agencies across the country will work with law enforcement to encourage the public to wear their safety belt. Ohio SADD is proud to partner with the ODPS to celebrate this message.
