The Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference is designed to be a new, fun-filled day intended for girls and boys going into grades 5 through 12, their parents, and teachers. The conference goal is to promote careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
The Northwest Ohio conference will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 8:00am to 3:00pm at The Ohio State University at Marion, Ohio campus.
Through the Expanding Your Horizons conference, STEM role models provide hands-on experiments for middle and high school students. The ultimate goal is to motivate students to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges.
Organizers hope that by introducing various careers, it will inspire girls (and boys) to recognize their potential and pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. When asked what they want to be when they grow up, organizers say that kids usually mention careers they are already exposed to, such as teacher, firemen, and others. By introducing them to more options, it is hoped that kids will realize there are a world of possibilities for their future.
Sessions will include introductions to a variety of careers, including:
- Mental Health Services
- Researcher
- Statistician
- Electrical Engineer
- Pharmacist
- Accounting
- Mortuary Science
- Educational Technology, OSU Columbus
- Elementary Teacher
- RN Clinical Management
- Quality Control Management
- Community Service
The EYH Network began in 1974 as the Math/Science Network, an informal group of women scientists and educators in the San Francisco Bay Area who were concerned about low female participation in math courses.
