U.S. Men Smack El Salvador 5-1

U.S. SoccerThe U.S. Men’s National Team advanced to the semifinal of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 5-1 victory against El Salvador as defender Clarence Goodson, midfielders Joe Corona and Mix Diskerud and forwards Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan scored for the Americans in front of a huge crowd at M&T Bank Stadium.

With the win, the USA moves on to the final four of the tournament where it will face the winner of the Honduras-Costa Rica match, which is the second quarterfinal of the day. The USA’s semifinal will be held at Cowboys Stadium on Wednesday, July 24 with a kickoff at 7 p.m. ET and broadcast live on Fox Soccer. The U.S. Men’s National Team also extended its record winning streak to nine games, a mark initially broken after the USA defeated Costa Rica 1-0 on July 16 for its eighth win in a row. The five goals also upped the USA’s total for the tournament to 16, the most scored in a CONCACAF Gold Cup by a U.S. team, beating its previous high of 13 scored in 2003 (accomplished in five games) and in 2007 (six games).

The USA had the vast majority of possession throughout the match, and if not for a fantastic first-half performance from El Salvador goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo, the game would have been decided well before the break.
