On the strength of the defense shutting down wide receiver A.J. Green and quarterback Brian Hoyer throwing for a pair of touchdowns, the Cleveland Browns earned a 17-6 victory over their in-state rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals, at FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday.
Hoyer tossed a one-yard touchdown pass to running back Chris Ogbonnaya that extended the Browns’ lead over the Bengals to 17-6 with 4:54 left to play in the fourth quarter.
Hoyer engineered the 12-play, 91-yard drive in 6:32.
Earlier in the drive, Ogbonnaya converted a third-and-one from the Browns’ 29-yard line, and tight end Jordan Cameron turned a second-and-nine at Cleveland’s 49-yard line into a first-and-10 from Cincinnati’s 24-yard line after a 31-yard gain.
The Browns held a 10-6 lead over the Bengals after three quarters of play.
Cincinnati kicker Mike Nugent converted a 43-yard field-goal attempt and drew the Bengals to within four points of the Browns, 10-6, with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Kicker Billy Cundiff converted a 51-yard field-goal attempt and extended the Browns’ lead over the Bengals to 10-3 with 5:10 to play in the third quarter. Cundiff’s kick was his second of the year from at least 50 yards, and capped off a 10-play, 17-yard drive that lasted 3:25.
The Browns held a 7-3 lead over the Bengals at halftime of Sunday’s game.
Earlier in the game, Nugent converted a 25-yard field-goal attempt, and cut the Browns’ lead to 7-3 with 10:48 to play in the first half. Nugent finished off a 15-play, 46-yard scoring drive that took 6:25 off the game clock. He is now three of four on field-goal tries this season.
