Georgia Downs Lady Buckeyes 53-49

The Ohio State women’s basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 53-49, at No. 22 Georgia Sunday at the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens. The Buckeyes led 33-29 at the break, but a 14-2 run by the Lady Dogs to start the second half helped pave the way for the victory.

Ohio State had its chances to pull off the upset, but shot just 14 percent from the field in the second half and 6 of 11 from the line.

Ameryst Alston scored a team-high 22 points for the Buckeyes. She scored 16 in the first half, hitting her her fourth three-pointer of the half at the buzzer to give Ohio State a 33-29 advantage. She was 6 of 9 shooting in the first 20 minutes as the Buckeyes hit six three-point field goals overall.

But the second half was a different story as the Buckeyes had a hard time getting anything to fall. Their defense kept them within striking distance, holding Georgia to 26 percent shooting in the second half. But it was all the Lady Dogs needed as Ohio State hit just one field goal over the final 6:45.
