Just 12 games into the season, in many ways, the Cavaliers already are in late-season form.
Already, they’ve called a players-only meeting.
On Wednesday, they were booed heartily by their own impatient and unsatisfied fans.
And for some added drama, they had to rely upon some stifling, late-game defense and old standby, Kyrie Irving, for another dramatic fourth-quarter comeback … only to suffer a just-short 98-91 loss to the Washington Wizards at The Q.
In the end, the lackadaisical effort had coach Mike Brown fuming, outsiders wondering if Brown already has lost his team and players talking about turning things around before it’s too late for the 4-8 Cavaliers.
“One through 15, it’s something we all have to get control of now, or we’re going to lose control of this before it’s too late,” guard Jarrett Jack said.
The Cavaliers’ attempt to overturn a 27-point, third-quarter deficit was too little, too late against the Wizards – and fans at The Q showed their displeasure by booing their own team on multiple occasions.
The loudest came in the third quarter after Wizards guard John Wall sailed in for a dunk that gave Washington a 73-46 advantage.
The discontent remained, reappeared for many of the Cavaliers’ 16 turnovers, and returned with gusto in the fourth quarter when 2013 No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett let sail a 3-pointer that missed everything – and dashed momentum after a 9-2 Cleveland run.
