Police Warn of Phone Scam Targeting Marion Residents

Marion Police DepartmentThe Marion Police Department reported they had received multiple calls on Friday, March 14, 2014 from area residents who reported receiving suspicious phone calls. The reports were largely similar with the caller claiming to be from Mastercard or Chase Bank.

The caller claimed that the person’s bank card had been lost or stolen and asked them to “Press 1” for the security department. Each of the reporting parties indicated that they did not proceed with the call.

“The context of these calls appear to be that of a scam and by following the directions and pressing the button, the victim may be subject to unapproved charges to their account,” stated Lt. B.J. Gruber in a media release. “Additionally, the callers may attempt to obtain personal information, including Social Security Number and banking information.”

If you receive a call of this nature, police advise that you not proceed with the phone call. If you believe that your account information may have been compromised or if you determine that your card may actually be lost or stolen, it is recommended that you contact the appropriate bank that issued to card.

Any questions regarding this matter may be directed to the Marion Police Department at 740-387-2525.
