Grammy Award Winners The Manhattan Transfer Coming to Palace

The Manhattan TransferThe Marion Palace Theatre located in downtown Marion, Ohio will host the legendary vocal group The Manhattan Transfer on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $28, $32, $36, $40.

Few groups have a more distinguished musical pedigree than The Manhattan Transfer performing a blend of fusion jazz, doo wop, Latin melodies, pop/rock, and on and on. The group has earned its place as a cornerstone within the jazz community as well as the main-stream music community world-wide and continues to create compelling vocal music that draws audiences of all ages and walks of life.

The Manhattan Transfer, consisting of Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne (who recently rejoined the group after a battle with cancer), has enjoyed a long and successful career that spans four decades.  They’ve earned Grammy Awards by the dozens, sold-out world tours, done commercials, had their own TV Show and sold millions of records – but what gives this group the honor of being known as one of the greatest vocal groups in history is that signature sound: four-part harmony, tight, precise and strong.

The Platinum-selling jazz/pop group has released nearly 30 albums, won 10 Grammy Awards and earned 17 nominations. The group earned an impressive number of No. 1 singles throughout the late 1970s and 80s, including the megahit “Birdland,” which is generally considered as the group’s anthem, “Boy from New York City,” “Until I Met You,” “Route 66,” “Why Not?,” “Operator,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Chanson d’Amour” and many more.

In 1985, the group made music history by receiving 12 Grammy nominations for the album “Vocalese,” making it the single greatest Grammy-nominated album in one year. This cemented the group’s status as one of the most important and innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music.  In 1998, the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Although the singers are accustomed to playing in large venues and amphitheaters with a backup band, The Manhattan Transfer is excited to bring to Marion a special “Living Room Session” concert which the group promises to be an intimate and up-close experience.  The singers perform a stripped-down acoustic concert with just their incredible harmonious voices and longtime pianist and music director Yaron Gershovsky. Audience members will be treated to their biggest hits, as well as some long-lost gems from their music catalog. The group will share stories behind the music – their inspirations, collaborations, and tales from the studio and the road.  And as they take the audience on a journey from their early days to the present, they will feature a collection of on-stage visuals against a historic slideshow backdrop.

The Manhattan Transfer concert will take the Marion Palace Theatre stage on Saturday, May 3 at 8 p.m.  Reserved seating tickets are $28, $32, $36, $40.  Sponsored in part by Gunder-Hall & Folk, Wyandot Inc. and funded by Ohio Arts Council

Tickets are available at the Marion Palace Theatre Box Office, 276 W Center Street in Marion, by calling (740)383-2101 or online at www.marionpalace.org.
