Marion Unemployment Hits Lowest Rate Since 2007

The official unemployment rate for Marion County was 5.4 percent in April 2014, down from 6.3 percent in March and down nearly 2 percent over the past two months. The figures from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services gives Marion County its lowest unemployment rate since it stood at 5.2 percent in October 2007.

Even so, the percentage only tells part of the story. The decrease in the unemployment rate in Marion County is entirely due to a shrinking available workforce.

The local rate drop in April came as the available workforce dropped by 300 people to 27,900 which resulted in 300 fewer people reporting as unemployed. The number of employed individuals in Marion County remained steady at 26,400 in April.

The available workforce in Marion County in October 2007 was 32,600, or 4,700 more than last month.

Other counties surrounding Marion also saw dips in their rates.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in April 2014, down from 6.1 percent in March.

The U.S. unemployment rate for April was 6.3 percent, down from 6.7 percent in March, and down from 7.5 percent in April 2013.
