While the unemployment rate for the State of Ohio remained unchanged in June, the rate for Marion and surrounding counties increased due to the way the rates are calculated. Marion County’s rate was 5.9 percent in June 2014, up from 5.3 percent in May 2014.
The reason for the difference in rates between the area and the State of Ohio is due to the State’s number being seasonally adjusted. The local rates do not receive this benefits which takes into account normal, seasonal changes in employment numbers.
The Marion County rate is much lower than a year ago when it stood at 8.3 percent in June 2013. The available workforce in Marion also increase by 100 people to a total of 28,200 with 1,700 listed as unemployed.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in June 2014, unchanged from May 2014.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 6.1 percent, down from 6.3 percent in May, and down from 7.5 percent in June 2013.
