Local postal workers will be collecting more than the mail on Saturday, May 9, 2015 as they partner with United Way of Marion County to participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) annual “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.”
This annual effort has become the largest single-day food drive in the nation’s history, resulting in more than a half billion pounds of food to local food banks, pantries and shelters in all 50 states. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of this event.
Last year in Marion County, more than 30,000 pounds of nonperishable food was collected and donated for distribution to the Kirkpatrick Church of Christ, Heart of Ohio Homeless Shelter, Mobile Meals, Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul, Turning Point and Victory Center food banks.
Postal customers are asked to hang a food donation on their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers the mail on Saturday, May 9, and the carrier will do the rest. Just leave some canned soup, juice, pasta, cereal, rice or other non-perishable items. Collection barrels will be set up at all Post Office branches to accommodate those with Post Office Boxes. Items can also be dropped off at the Post Office on Barks Road between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM that day.
The United Way of Marion County is proud to once again provide coordination and promotion of the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive in the Marion community. To find out more or to get involved, call 740-383-3108.
