Ohio State got 27 points from Kelsey Mitchell and a double-double from Shayla Cooper but in the end, No. 3 Notre Dame made two plays down the stretch and pulled-out a 75-72 victory Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion.
The loss snaps the Buckeyes four-game winning streak and drops them to 4-3 on the season while Notre Dame improves to 7-0.
The Buckeyes had two chances midway through the fourth quarter to take the lead but were called for offensive fouls. The Irish took advantage and took a 69-63 advantage with four minutes to play. The Buckeyes battled back and got a jumper by Cooper, a lay-up by Asia Doss and a three-point possession from Mitchell to take a 70-69 lead with just over two minutes to play.
Notre Dame’s Madison Cable made a deep three-pointer with less than a minute to play and Ameryst Alston evened the score for the Buckeyes on the ensuing possession. The Irish then got three free throws over the final 30 seconds and Mitchell’s last second three-pointer at the buzzer missed the mark.
Cable led four Buckeyes in double-figures with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Allen added 20 points and five assists.
The Irish won the battle on the boards 45-34 and scored 19 points off the Buckeye’s season-high 20 turnovers.
