Mayor Scott Schertzer has announced the retirement of Jay Shoup, Director of Public Service for the City of Marion, effective December 31, 2015.
During his tenure with the City of Marion, Shoup oversaw the operation of the City’s Airport, Engineering, Maintenance, Sanitation, Streets, Transit, Utility Billing, and Water Pollution Control Departments. He has also served on the Marion County Regional Planning Commission and the City Planning Commission.
When joining the City of Marion as Director of Public Service on April 7, 2008, Jay continued his years in the public sector that originally began in the late 1960’s as a summer intern for the City engineering department. His professional career has been divided between the public and private sectors.
Prior to joining the City of Marion, Mr. Shoup worked for the Ohio EPA and Marion County Sanitary Engineer’s Office, as well as two Central Ohio engineering consulting firms.
“Jay was instrumental in guiding our Service Departments through the extremely tenuous economic times that the City experienced in recent years. He has not only challenged our departments to maintain services while experiencing a decrease in funding, but stepped in and helped when and where needed,” said Schertzer. “He has been an excellent leader over the last eight years and I truly appreciate the guidance he has provided our departments.”
