U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown has released an interactive online map showing community centers, libraries and other sites where volunteer tax help will be available throughout Ohio.
Click this link and scroll with your cursor to enlarge or reduce the size of the map. Then click on a dot near your neighborhood to get details, and call the center for more information or to see if an appointment is needed.
Many of the sites are in community centers and public libraries. Brown released the map to promote programs that help seniors and moderate-and-low income Ohioans fill out their tax forms. He said that people who don’t normally consult with accountants should still be able to get advice on tax benefits to which they are entitled.
For example, while 950,000 Ohio households claimed an Earned Income Tax Credit of more than $2,400 last year, one in every five households eligible for the credit in the United States failed to claim it, Brown said.
“Wall Street CEOs and billionaire corporations have armies of accountants on their side – let’s make sure hard-working families in Ohio know there is free help available to make sure they get their maximum refund,” Brown said. “We want to help more Ohioans claim the tax credits they’ve earned and put more money back in their pockets.”
Many tax volunteers are retirees helping through AARP. But regardless of their working backgrounds or how they signed up, volunteers are trained and assigned based on their skills, according to the IRS.
