Bernice E. Kummerer, 95, of Marion

Bernice E. Kummerer, age 95, of Marion died Tuesday afternoon, March 8, 2011 at Kingston Residence of Marion.

She was born on August 28, 1915 in Marion, Ohio the daughter of Charles Henry Augustav and Bertha Ann (Obenaur) Ferriman.

Bernice was a lifelong resident of the Marion area and a graduate of Harding High School in the class of 1933.

In 1935, she married Robert Fredrick Weber of Marion.  Robert died in 1938 due to a sudden illness.

On November 21, 1953 she married Willis “Bill” Paul Kummerer.  Together they owned and operated family farms in the Marion area for 35 years until moving to Marion.  She was considered the “helping hand” at the farm and would do anything that was needed; drive tractors and trucks, run errands, you name it.  The grandchildren recall fond memories of many frequent visits to Nanny and Papa’s farm.

In addition to her work on the farm she also worked at the Depot during World War II and was a manager at Fulfillment Corporation for 10 years.

A woman of faith, Bernice was a member of the Prospect Street United Methodist Church where she attended regularly until driving became too much.

Always focused on family, Bernice was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Her interests revolved around her grandchildren and what they were doing.  Holiday times were very important and while there was typically a large amount of traveling, she only missed one family Christmas and that was due to severe winter weather.

She also used her creative side to create quilts for her family.  She and Bill also enjoyed outdoor activities.  Two of their favorites were wild mushroom hunting in Ohio and Michigan and perch fishing on Lake Erie.  Bernice was a dedicated and fastidious gardener until her 90s.

Those that knew Bernice will remember her for her independent and determined spirit.

She will be missed by her son Robert Weber and his wife Bobbie of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; five grandchildren Allison Dewees and her husband David of Texas: their children Sarah and Andrew; Jennifer Buirge and her husband Jerry of Illinois: their children Rachel, Emily, and Daniel; Robert Weber and his wife Kelli of Texas; Michael Weber and his wife Julie Heyd of Minnesota: their children Signy, Bria, and Tryg; and Melissa Weber-Sanders and her husband Mark of Minnesota; their children Corey, Joseph, and Rowan; brother James Ferriman and his wife Eileen of Marion; numerous cousins,  nieces and nephews; and her dearest friend Betty Pierce.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brothers Robert, Raymond, Elmer, and 2 in infancy; and her sister Donna Ruth Cotton

Friends may call on the family on Monday, March 14, 2011 from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion.  Funeral services will be held there on Tuesday at 10:30 AM with Pastor Joseph Miller officiating.  Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a special thank you to her physician Dr. Kathy Dixon and the staff at Kingston Memory Care Unit for the exceptional care they gave Bernice.
