Clippers smack Bats 5-1

And on the sixth day of the 2016 regular season, the sun finally shined on central Ohio, and it shined in more ways than one for the Clippers (2-1) en route to a 5-1 win over Louisville (0-2) on Tuesday night at Huntington Park in front of 5,008 fans.

Things got off to a bumpy start for Columbus southpaw starter T.J. House (1-0), who gave up a lead off triple to Louisville shortstop Jose Peraza in the first inning. Peraza was then driven in via a hit and a fielders choice by left fielder Jesse Winker.

That run would be the only one House would surrender, however, as he was able to get himself out of a bases loaded jam. He went six innings, gave up five hits, walked one batter and struck out four.

The Clippers would tie the game in the bottom of the first as Michael Brantley would score thanks to a Lonnie Chisenhall sacrifice fly.

Brantley and Chisenhall are both in Ohio’s capital on rehab assignment for the Cleveland Indians. Brantley, who played left field, went 1-for-2 with a double while Chisenhall was 0-for-2 with that RBI while playing in right field.

Louisville’s right-handed starter in Jon Moscot (0-1) was cruising through four innings like his counterpart in House, but Columbus tagged him for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and that would be all the Clippers needed to pick up win number two this season.

Erik Gonzalez scored on a Michael Choice groundout to third. Adam Moore scored on a Michael Martinez double to right field and an error on Bats right fielder Kyle Waldrop and Joey Butler pounded his first home run of the year over the wall in right-center field, plating Martinez and making it a 5-1 game.

Butler would finish the night 2-for-2, adding a double in the bottom of the 8th inning as he came on to replace Brantley after the fourth inning.

Moscot tossed five and 2/3 innings, was charged for five earned runs on six hits and fanned six Clippers on the evening.

The Clippers and Bats will conclude their first series of the year against each other tomorrow in business day special doubleheader fashion. Game one begins at 11:35 a.m. with gates opening at 10:30 a.m. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
