Clippers down Bats 1-0

If you’re a Columbus Clippers fan, your knuckles probably resemble that of Casper the Friendly Ghost’s at this point, because the Clippers (5-6) went right down to the wire for a fifth consecutive game on Tuesday night, bouncing back from last night’s 1-0 loss to the Bats (4-6) in a 1-0 win this time around, in front of a crowd of 4,945 at Louisville Slugger Field.

In the top of the fourth inning, Columbus right fielder Jordan Smith, in his second game as a Clipper after being called up from AA Akron, grounded a ball to Louisville second baseman Jose Peraza. Adam Moore, on first base at the time, helped the Clippers avoid a double play by turning around and heading back to first as Peraza wanted to tag him out. Moore was tossed out at second but Smith was safe at first and Joey Butler scored the first run in 12 innings for the Clippers, as it would prove to be the difference in the game.

Clippers right-handed starter Will Roberts (1-1) threw five innings of scoreless baseball, giving up six hits while walking two batters and striking out two.

He lived dangerously for most of his outing, as he was able to get out of consecutive bases-loaded jams in the fourth and fifth innings.

His opposition in Louisville top prospect Keyvius Sampson (0-1) tossed three and 1/3 innings, giving up the only run of the game on one hit. He had three walks and two strikeouts.

Clippers reliever Austin Adams was able to lockdown his second save of the year in closing out the ninth inning.

The Clippers and Bats will wrap up their three game series in the rubber match tomorrow morning. First pitch from Slugger Field is set for 11:05 a.m.
