Eugene L. “Gene” Hypes, Jr., 84, of Marion

Dr. Eugene L. “Gene” Hypes, Jr., age 84 of Marion, died on Thursday October 13, 2016 at Marion General Hospital.

Gene was born on May 14, 1932 in Winona, West Virginia, the son of Eugene L. and Addie E. (Hicks) Hypes, Sr. After graduation from Harding High School, Gene attended the University of Colorado and then the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. In 1961, Dr. Hypes opened his dental practice in Marion, E.L. Hypes, DDS, Inc., operating the practice for the next 40 years.

Alongside many other brave Americans, Gene responded to his call of duty and proudly served his country during the Korean War as a soldier in the United States Navy.

Gene was full of life, wonder and drive. He had a number of hobbies that kept him engaged with family and friends. Gene loved outdoor sports, whether it was fishing, hunting, trap shooting or playing a round of golf with his buddies, he enjoyed being out in nature. He also took an interest in Cowboy Action Shooting, a competitive shooting tournament that occurred around the state. Gene was an avid reader, constantly expanding his knowledge and seeking to know more. In retirement, he took up the hobby of creating beautiful pieces of jewelry, jewelry that is now a cherished gift by members of his family and friends. While at Primrose, Gene enjoyed lunchtime conversation with friends Joanne, Juanita and Alice.

Gene is survived by his children: Dr. David E. (Maria L.) Hypes and Beckey (Wayne) Scott; daughter-in-law Marianne J. Hypes; grandchildren: Dr. Cameron D. (Dr. Sarah) Hypes, Jessica A. (Jon R.)  Miller, Julia M. Hypes, Kari L. Hypes, Delaney D. Scott and Riley E. Scott; great granddaughters: Mia L. Hypes and Emma L. Miller; his sister Phyllis (John) Jerew and his very special friend Shelby Needham.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son Douglas J. Hypes and infant daughter Kimberly Hypes and his sister Peggy (Arnold) Brookover.

Calling hours and a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 22, 2016, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at All in One Enterprise, 1775 Marion Waldo Road, Marion, Ohio. Graveside services will be held privately by the family at a later date with Pastor Ryan Strothers officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Baptist Church.
