Loraine “Lo” Cantrell, 87, formerly of Marion

Loraine “Lo” CantrellLoraine “Lo” Cantrell, age 87, of Bucyrus and formerly of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 17, 2016, peacefully in her sleep at home.

On June 2, 1929, Loraine was born in Johnson County, Kentucky, one of nine children of the late Herbert and Julie (Stumbo) Castle.

While growing up, Loraine met a young man from her neighborhood, Harry Cantrell, whom she knew she would marry.  They tied the knot on May 24, 1947, and moved their family to Marion, Ohio, in the early 1950’s.  Together they shared fifty three years of marriage, and lovingly raised five children.  He preceded her in death on June 24, 2000.

In addition to being a loving homemaker for her husband and children, Loraine worked for over twenty years as a cook at MedCenter Hospital in Marion, where she was endearingly known as “Short Cake” for her small stature.  Later, she worked at Harding Pointe, again cooking for everyone there until she was 79 years old.

The matriarch of the family, Loraine loved bringing everyone in the family together.  Sunday’s were special in her home, as she would cook a huge meal for anyone in her family who could make it.  They would visit from all over the state and stay for hours, often ending the night playing cards together.

A woman of faith, Loraine recently attended the Christ Gospel Church in Bucyrus.

The oldest of Loraine and Harry’s children, Doug, dedicated his life to caring for his parents.  The three of them especially loved traveling together, visiting many of the fifty states in their large van.

Loraine “was a hoot, always making you laugh.”  She also loved telling a good story, especially a good horror story.  She cherished her family, and loved every minute she spent with her grandchildren.

She will be missed by her four children: Dean Cantrell, of Marion, Carolyn (Mike) Marshall of Bucyrus, Phillip Cantrell and Herb Cantrell, both of Marion; eight grandchildren: Jason Cantrell, Courtney (Paul) Herr, Deetra Marshall, Justin (Jodi) Cantrell, Nikki (Gary) Hunley, Timmy Bidwell, Josh Bidwell, and Rochelle Coons; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Billy Ray Castle of Springfield, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Loraine was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Cantrell; granddaughter, Lindsay Cantrell; four brothers and three sisters; and her beloved dog, Bo, who went everywhere with her.

Her family will greet friends from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2016, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER CHAPEL, 360 E. Center St., Marion.  Services honoring her life will also be held there at 11 a.m. on Monday, with Rev. Jack Hager officiating.  Burial will follow in Caledonia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to assist the family with funeral expenses.
