Ohio State won its third straight game on Sunday, defeating Illinois 88-64 to improve to 17-5. The Buckeyes are now 7-1 in Big Ten play, while the Fighting Illini drop to 8-12 (3-4 B1G).
Fueled by a season high 15 three-pointers, Ohio State improved to 49-20 all-time against Illinois.
Kelsey Mitchell led the way with 22 points, the 19th time this season she has led the Buckeyes in scoring. Three others reached double figures: Sierra Calhoun notched 11 points while Kiara Lewis and Asia Doss both added 10. Stephanie Mavunga and Linnae Harper both hauled in a team-leading nine rebounds.
The Fighting Illini started the game off with six straight points, but the Buckeyes charged right back with 13 unanswered points of their own to take a lead they would not relinquish. They led by 35 at one point, thanks in large part to outscoring their Big Ten foe 29-10 in the third quarter. On the defensive end Ohio State held Illinois to 36.9 percent shooting, the third straight game it has held its opponent to under 40 percent in that category.
