Philip Frederick Messenger, 78, of Marion

Philip Frederick Messenger age 78 passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, May 25, 2011.

Born in Marion to the late Genevra (Rice) and Miles Messenger.

Philip was the youngest of eight children, he graduated from Harding High School class of 1950, he played football, baseball, and loved fishing. Later in life he was an avid golfer.

After high school he served in World War II as a Paratrooper, Airborne Division. A prominent Marion businessman, he owned and operated long time produce market (Messenger's Market). The market was in operation for over 30 years starting in 1960. The market became his pride and joy and was always a family affair, employing many cousins, aunts, uncles and of course his four children. Philip had many fond memories in Marion and lots of friends. He was known to many for his keen sense of humor.

Philip is survived by children, Bambi (Dan) Bach, Jan (Bob Drollinger) Bruno, Michelle (Phillip) Garrett, three grandchildren,  one great-grandson, three sisters, Esther Dunbar of Marion, Mary Ellen Barnhouse of Florida, Helen Young of Westerville, and dear friends Alma and Bob Craven. He was formerly married to Carolyn Ann Harrold who survives in Columbus, He is preceded in death by his only son Philip B. Messenger, two sisters, Ruth Kirby, Rachel DeSimone, and two brothers Jim Messenger and David Messenger.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with long time family friend Rev Bob Jones officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
