Mary A. Martin, 71, of Marengo

Mary A. Martin, age 71 of Marengo passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville following a two month illness.

She was born on April 18, 1940 in Essex to the late Okie and Florence (Shillinger) Birchfield.

A graduate of Elm Valley High School in 1958, she earned her bachelor’s degree in education from The Ohio State University. For over 20 years Mary taught K thru second grade and reading at Highland West Elementary.

A member of Fargo Wesleyan Church, Rod-n-Tiques of Mt. Gilead, and the Ashley Book Club, she also enjoyed time sewing with her Waldo friends.  With an easy going nature, she was sweet to her core and loved everyone.  A collector of humming birds, she enjoyed quilting and getting her hands dirty in the garden while tending to her flowers.  Mary was always up for solving a good crossword puzzle with her son.  She was happiest in her gardens and being with her grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kindness and endearing smile.

She is survived by her beloved husband and companion of almost 50 years: James, son: Greg of Marengo, daughter: Emily (Jeffery) Mullaney of Raymond, Grandchildren: Lillee Keltner, Christine (Chris) Thompson, Holly (Josh) Hall, Jace Mullaney, Great-grandchildren: Landon, Skyler, Sealia, Regan, Brother: Richard (Barb) Birchfield of Delaware, and Patricia (Ken) Cox of Delaware.

She was preceded in death by son: James “Rick” Martin in 2006, and half-brothers: Joe (Betty) and Billy (Jane)Miller.

Friends may call Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Thursday 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Feathers officiating, interment Green Mound Cemetery.
