Roy G. Klingel, 81, of Waldo

Roy G. KlingelRoy G. Klingel, age 81 of Waldo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, surrounded by his loving family.

Roy was born in Marion County on April 19, 1937, the son of Raymond S. and Grace L. (Groll) Klingel, Sr. On August 9, 1969 Roy was united in marriage to Joan K. Ullmer. The couple was happily married for 49 loving years.

He was a graduate of Waldo High School class of 1955. While Roy was in school, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Roy was a lifelong, hard-working farmer and a dedicated family man. He also spent several years working at Landmark of Waldo.

In June of 1962, Roy along with good friend, George Yake, founded the world famous G&R Tavern; the G&R standing for George & Roy. The tavern continues to be a tradition for many, especially his extended family and friends.

When Roy’s children were growing up, the family spent many enjoyable visits with Joan’s family at their cottage located at Gem Beach along Lake Erie.

Roy had a love of sports that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his weekends watching his grandchildren play sports, attending Ohio State tailgates and games, and making countless memories with family and friends. He also took great pride in keeping his yard immaculate.

Roy was an avid golfer, often golfing at Kings Mill Golf Club or in the The Villages at Lady Lake, Florida. He proudly made three holes-in-1 in his lifetime. Roy and Joan enjoyed over 20 winters in Florida at The Villages and he cherished the last 10 years having his brother near him in the Villages. His weekdays were much of a ritual: rising before 6:00am to bike, walking miles for exercise to meet friends for coffee, followed by golfing, driving the golf cart to happy hour, and meeting friends for dinner.

Roy was a member of many organizations including: Elks Lodge #32 of Marion, Moose Lodge #889 of Marion, social member of the VFW Post #7201, social member of Waldo American Legion #605, Ohio Corn & Soybean Association, Farm Bureau, OSU Alumni Club of Tri-County Florida and member of Peace Community United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his beloved wife Joan K. Klingel; children: Todd A. (Carrie) Klingel of Dublin and Gina R. Klingel of Marion; grandchildren: Maxton, Adelyn, and Hudson Klingel; siblings: Ray (Mary Ann) Klingel and Judy M. (Jerry) Pope; brother-in-law Bryan (Sibby) Neff; niece Lori (Chuck) Ingram, nephews: Joey (Sharon) Steinhauser, and Jamey (Kelly) Steinhauser; three great nieces and three great nephews; and lifelong friend Rev.
