LTC Duane A. Slack,USA, Ret., age 71 of Westerville and formerly of Sparta passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville.
He was born on November 27, 1939 in Sparta to the late Fern A. and Norine (Hulse) Slack.
A graduate of Sparta High School in 1957, he then graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1961 as a Lieutenant with the schools ROTC program. While at Bowling Green, he met his bride of almost 50 years: Cloya (Scott). Together they traveled the world and raised their family, as he served in the US Army for 24 years.
Duane was most proud of his service to country. He endured two hardship tours of Vietnam and earned numerous citations. He retired in 1984 as the Director of Installation Services at DCSC in Columbus. Following his military career he lived near Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He also followed his passion of automobiles, later working as an automobile salesman.
Home was where his heart was, with his magnetic personality, to know him was to love him. He was an avid fan of sports, especially his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. In addition to cars, he also enjoyed fishing and treasured time spent with his grandchildren.
He was happiest helping others and will be remembered for his jovial personality and love of family.
In his terms, he is survived by his “buddy and soul mate” wife: Cloya, daughter: Tammy (Bill) Sabo of Westerville, son: Stuart Slack of Tulsa, OK, Grandchildren: Nicholas, Emily, Chloe, Sister: Judy K. (John) Weaver of Marengo, Brother: Richard D. (Barbara) Slack of Marengo, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends may call from Monday from 12:00Noon until 2:00 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Larry Carnes officiating, burial with full military honors will follow in Bloomfield Cemetery near Sparta.
