Robert Curtis Fletcher, age 92, of Marion, Ohio, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Kingston Residence of Marion.
He was born February 13, 1919 in White Plains, New York to the late Clarence C. and Hazel M. (Tompkins) Fletcher.
Robert was a 1936 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, New York. He studied at Fordham University where he majored in accounting.
During this period in his life he was quite active playing alternate on Fordham’s golf team and as a varsity member of their hockey team. He also was an assistant coach and later coach of high school hockey during his college days. Of the events he liked to recall are the two hockey games he played for Columbia University while at Fordham because Columbia didn’t have enough skaters. Schools were smaller in those days.
After receiving his B. S. Degree in Business Administration from Fordham University in 1940, he began a career with the New York Central Railroad where he worked for 17 ½ years.
In March of 1942 he was inducted into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and served with the 721st Railway Operating Battalion serving for two years in the China-Burma-India Theater of operations. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in July, 1946 remaining in a Reserve status until April, 1953.
In 1958 Robert moved to Marion joining General Telephone Company where he worked as Vice President, Personnel retiring in 1984. He served on the Marion Technical College Board of Directors.
Robert enjoyed tennis, ice hockey, golf, bowling and was a avid New York Yankees fan. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Noon Kiwanis Club, American Legion #0584, Kappa Alpha Pi National Fraternity and joined the Symposiarch Club in 1978. He was also a member of the Marion County Club for the past 41 years where he enjoyed the Jolly Rogers Golf Group. He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Evelyn, and they spent several winters in Venice, Florida and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn (Reade) Fletcher; daughter, Susan (John) Reynolds of Wilmington, DE and their children, Michael and Erin; son, Robert E. Fletcher, Columbus, OH; and daughter Jeanne (John) Tarkington of Cedar Rapids, IA and their daughter, Evan.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion from 4PM to 7PM. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 249 E. Center Street, Marion at 10:30AM with Pastor Colleen Ogle officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery.
