Virginia D. “Ginny” Weikel Levings, 85, of Mount Gilead

Virginia D. “Ginny” Weikel Levings, age 85, of Mount Gilead, died peacefully Friday afternoon, August 5, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her loving family following a fourteen year battle with cancer.

On December 18, 1925, Ginny was born on Salem Road in Claridon, Ohio, one of eight children of the late Charles and Anna (Van Horn) Calvert.  Her family moved to the Chesterville area when she was younger, and she attended Chesterville High School with the Class of 1944.

Shortly following graduation, Virginia had married Gene Weikel, with whom she had four children: Robert, Rodger, Ronald and Roberta, and shared over fifty one years with.  She also took care of their home and helped him on the farm in any way she could, by doing everything from “driving the tractor to bailing hay”.

In addition to helping on the farm, Ginny also had worked for many years at Highland Schools.  Her whole life she had been a hard worker, and no matter what, “she always did the best she could with what she had”.

A woman of faith, Ginny was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church in Mount Gilead.  Also, she was formerly a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher.  Most important of all to Ginny, she was proud to have started a fair ministry and didn’t miss one day for over thirty four years, “saving people and helping them find the Lord”.

For the cub scouts, Ginny had been one of the first den mothers with her friend, Betty Chipps.  She had also even dabbled in painting.

Later in life, Ginny married Donald L. Levings on August 19, 1995.  Together they shared lots of laughter and a special bond during the fourteen years of marriage.  He preceded her in death on October 25, 2009.

Always making “the best out of any situation”, Ginny truly believed “she had cancer for such a long time to be a witness to others” and show them there is still joy despite the struggles.

Having a warm and caring heart, Ginny could warm up quickly with any one with her smile and gabby personality, as “she had never met a stranger”.

She will be dearly missed by her two children: Ronald (Connie) Weikel of Fredericktown, and Roberta Briley of Marengo; thirteen grandchildren: Rodney Weikel, Kim (Tony) Berry, Ralph Weikel, Jim and Tammy Hatten, Marsha (Dave) Welle, Shawn (Kelly) Weikel, Shad Weikel, Brian (Jamie) Weikel, Michelle (Tim) Colatruglio, Tammy (John) Underwood, Lori (John) Cecil, and Rebecca (Vince) Serio; numerous great-grandchildren; former husband, Gene Weikel of Fredericktown; a step daughter, Kathy (Dan) Rummel of Dillon, Montana; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Harbaugh of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her two sons and a daughter-in-law: Robert “Bob” Weikel in 2011, and Rodger and Karen Weikel in 1999; a step son, Donald “Gene” Levings; two brothers: Buster and John Calvert; and four sisters: Mary Hunter, Goldie Tobin, Anna Wood, and Helen Irons.

Virginia’s family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Services honoring her life will also be held there on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., with Hospice Chaplain Dave Matos officiating.  Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
