Properly Dispose of Your Old Medications at Free Drop Off

Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention, Marion-Crawford ADAMH, Marion General Hospital, along with officers from Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department, and MARMET, are teaming up for Medication Disposal Day, a part of National Take Back Drug Day, on Saturday, April 28, 2012. The day includes a drive thru drop off, providing a convenient way for local resident to safely dispose old prescription medications and medical supplies.

The local drop off will be at the Marion County Building, 222 West Center Street, in the rear parking lot. There are no questions asked. Officers will simply take your materials which will then be safely disposed of protecting your health and identity.

According to Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention Director Angela Carbetta:

  • everyday 2,500 teens across the country use a prescription drug to get high for the first time,
  • more people die in Ohio from unintentional medication poisoning than from motor vehicle accidents, and
  • traces of flushed medications are showing up in drinking water supplies.

During their regular Thursday morning meeting, Carbetta told the Marion County Commissioners that it is extremely important that people dispose their old medications properly.

“We’re drinking each other’s medications which is gross and unhealthy,” said Carbetta.

If you are reading this story, but do not live in the Marion area, you can still participate in the National Take Back Drug Day by going to www.dea.gov to find a disposal spot where you can safely hand over unwanted prescription medications.
