Annual Marion Red Cross Radiothon is Thursday

The American Red Cross Radiothon – a 12-hour fundraiser on WMRN/WYNT radio – will be held on Thursday, May 10th. This annual event, a major source of funding for the local chapter, is being broadcast live from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on WMRN AM 1490 and WYNT Majic 95.9 FM.

Clear Channel Marion, the primary event sponsor, will help sell a variety of donated items by describing them on the air. Meanwhile, phone bank volunteers will accept bids and pledges called in by listeners.

Auction items donated by Marion-area businesses and individuals include: fine jewelry, memorabilia autographed by sports legends, a gas grill with a selection of meats and sauces, a college tuition certificate, and a whole-hog barbeque that provides the main dish for up to 100 guests, many golf items, Indianapolis 500 tickets, and much, much more.

Prospective bidders can preview many of the auction items at the Radiothon web site at www.radiothonmarion.org.  Early-bids may also be placed on the web site until 7:00 p.m. May 9th.  The top bid on each auction item will be the starting bids for the on-air auction.  To place an early bid an account will need to be created so the bidders contact information is available should they place the winning bid.  For those that may be frequent bidders, the web site can also be used to obtain a free express bidder number.  Use the express bidder number when calling during the on-air event and your call will be quick and easy.  Check out the web site often as new items are being added frequently.

Pledges are also encouraged, such as those already provided by the Morral Companies and Marion Correctional Institution Branch of the American Red Cross – Marion County Chapter.  Financial gifts of any size will be put to use and greatly appreciated.

Third-party fundraisers, known as "Heroes" projects, include River Rock Rehabilitation through basket raffles, a chili lunch at Ohio American Water Company, and Buffalo Wild Wings will be hosting an “*Eat Wings*” fund raiser on May 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Red Cross, and others.

Bids or a pledge are accepted via phone at 740-725-0099 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 10th.

The American Red Cross is a charitable organization, led and supported by volunteers. Across the country, the organization assists in blood collecting, Services to the Armed Forces, and provides disaster assistance with emergency food, clothing, shelter and other needs.
