For those looking to grow their own garden this year, at least two Marion groups are offering space. The Marion Community Garden is holding their official opening day on Saturday and the Marion Family YMCA has already kicked off their first ever community garden. The gardens in the area do not stop with these two organizations as more and more people are coming together to create their own gardens.
An early spring has been a big benefit for the Marion Community Garden, says organizer Terry Cline. Volunteers have been mowing, tilling and mulching plots which are available to the public. Cline says there is still plenty of space for those wanting to join the garden this year.
The 2012 opening is set for May 12 at the garden located off of Mark Street, just north of the Boys & Girls Club office. Plans for opening day include Alpine horns and a ground blessing.
This year a local Boy Scout Troop plans to grow popcorn to sell at this year’s Popcorn Festival. Director of the Marion County Historical Society Gail Martin plans a bird and butterfly garden. Learning seminars are planned throughout the summer.

The Marion Family YMCA says many families living in the Marion would like to grow some of their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Some want to save money on their food bills. Others like the freshness, flavor and wholesomeness of home- grown produce. And for many, gardening is a relaxing way to exercise and enjoy being out-of-doors.
With all of that in mind, the YMCA is inviting the public to reserve a plot at their community garden. The fee is $20.00 per plot and there is a limited amount available.
