Marion County Unemployment Jumps

The unemployment rate for Marion County jumped to 8.1 percent in June 2012, up from 7.4 percent in May 2012. This comes in the same month that saw the statewide rate go down just slightly. The reason, according to officials, is that the statewide rate is adjusted for seasonal changes and the local rate is not.

The official figures from the State of Ohio Department of Job and Family Services shows that Marion County had 2,400 people looking for work out of a workforce of 29,500. The available workforce is 100 fewer than in May while the number of people looking for work increased by 200.

The local rate is still much lower than a year ago when it sat at 10.3 percent with 3,100 people looking for work.

Every county surround Marion also saw rates increase by varying degrees. Morrow County had the smallest increase while Hardin County has a slightly larger increase.
