Ohio State Marion invites the community to attend the 42nd Annual Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture, featuring Cathy Levine, executive director of the Universal Health Care Action Network (Ohio). Ms. Levine will present, “The Affordable Care Act: The Road Forward to Health Care for All,” Thursday, April 17, at noon in Morrill Hall, Room 200.
Ms. Levine will review the major provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to give an overview of how the ACA works to expand coverage, improve care and lower costs. She will address why the ACA represents a major step forward in U.S. health policy and review major weaknesses in the law and its implementation, suggesting areas where change is needed. Levine will discuss the political roadblocks to enacting improvements in the law (along with forces trying to repeal the law) and finish with what the future looks like for health care advocacy around implementation, including efforts and opportunities in different states to move toward a more efficient system.
In addition to her current position of Executive Director of UHCANOhio, Cathy Levine is co-Chair of Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage, consumer representative to the Ohio Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative, the Governor’s Advisory Council on Payment Reform, and in January 2014 was awarded Families USA’s annual Consumer Health Advocate award.
Since 1972, The Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture has been delivered annually at the Marion Campus of The Ohio State University. All lecturers invited to speak have demonstrated concerns similar to those for which Norman Thomas lived-peace, social justice, rational discourse, and the expansion of democracy.
The Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public. The 42nd Annual Norman Thomas Lecture is organized by the History Department at Ohio State Marion, and sponsored by the Harding/Thomas Endowment Fund, and Fahey Bank.
