MTC Taking Over Harding Home Management

The Ohio Historical Society will conduct a public meeting on Tuesday, April 13 to solicit input concerning the future management of the Harding Home & Tomb by the Marion Technical College.

The meeting will take place at 7:00pm in Room 120 A of the Marion Technical College’s Library/Classroom Building, which is located at 1465 Mount Vernon Ave., Marion.

Representatives from the Ohio Historical Society and the Marion Technical College will be on hand to discuss the future management of the site and answer questions. By managing the historic site on behalf of the historical society, the college will keep it open to the public.

“The public meeting is an opportunity for members of the community to learn how the Ohio Historical Society and Marion Technical College will work together in managing the home and the memorial,” said George Kane, OHS director of Historic Sites and Facilities. “Our experience has shown that theses historic site management agreements have been very successful in increasing access, community involvement and preservation of the historic site.”

According to Andrew Harper, vice president of Student Services and Institutional Advancement at Marion Technical College, students will receive cooperative education, service learning and volunteer experiences. Plans for managing the Harding Home & Tomb include having students: develop a Web site as well as audio and video presentations for use on tours and posting online; design and execute marketing and fund-raising plans; and assist with educational programs for groups of visiting elementary students.

The college also will establish an advisory committee consisting of community leaders that advise Marion Technical College and Harding site administrators regarding services, funding and education programs.

“Marion Technical College is pleased to step forward, and with the help of the community, assist in operations of the Harding Home and Tomb,” said Harper. “We are excited to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen our community ties and help maintain this piece of history in our own community.”
