Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Tuesday at 12:53 pm. The crash occurred on Caledonia Northern Road south of Linn Hipsher Road, in Marion County.
Stephen E. Melroy, age 23, of Caledonia, Ohio was driving a motor scooter northbound on Caledonia Northern Road. Brice E. Gates, age 20, of Caledonia, Ohio was driving a 1999 Ford F-550 southbound on Caledonia Northern Road.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the scooter driven by Melroy may have driven left of center when it was struck by the Gates vehicle.
Stephen Melroy was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Coroner Marc Comianos. A passenger on the scooter, Callie J. Bramel, age 21, of Marion, was transported via Med Flight to OSU Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition. Helmets were not in use in the crash.
Lieutenant Chuck Jones, Marion Post Commander, said, ”Anytime a life is lost in a traffic crash, it is a tragic event."
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, First Consolidated Fire Department and EMS and Stofchek EMS.
The crash remains under investigation.
