Television ad spending in Ohio's sometimes bitter races for state Supreme Court led the nation during the last decade, according to a new national study.
The report shows that between 2000 and 2009, ad spending in Ohio high court races reached $21.3 million, including $7.8 million spent by outside groups.
The state ranked second in money raised by high court candidates for the decade, according to the report issued by groups that track spending by judicial candidates nationwide. Ohio candidates raised $29.8 million compared to No. 1 Alabama's $41 million.
Ohio is one of 22 states with contested state Supreme Court elections. Its justices run without party labels, a practice Democrats recently filed suit to change.
