Green Awards Given for Environmental Efforts

Angela Carbetta, Director of Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention, handed out several Green Awards at Thursday’s Marion County Commissioners meeting. The Commissioners also issued a proclamation in honor of Earth Day, which is Sunday, April 22.

The Commissioners declared it “Earth Week 2012: We’re All In This Together” for Marion County and said they were encouraging community members to participate in recycling, clean-ups, and environmental awareness activities.

Carbetta gave out eight Green Awards to individuals who have helped further environmental causes in the Marion area. The awards were actually recycled themselves. Carbetta said she found a box full of the little statuettes in a trash bin during the Popcorn Festival. She said they represent the disposable attitude that exists in the community. She also promised she washed them before giving them away.

Those awarded included:

  • Teri Slaughterbeck, a clerk in the Commissioners’ Office, who Carbetta said has provided lots of help to her office in various ways, including with the website. She said she doesn’t have to help, but is always offering to volunteer her help.
  • Karen Herr, Downtown Marion Manager, who Carbetta said is a doer and has organized several cleanups in the downtown over the past year.
  • Candice DeWitt who Carbetta said started a group called Sustainable Marion. The small grow is working to help make Marion a “greener” community and is open to anyone interested in joining.
  • Tarina Rose and her son Alex who Carbetta said has helped with numerous events and activities, including an office intervention to help de-clutter and organize.
  • Scott Crider who Carbetta said has worked to recycle as much as possible when it comes the St. Paul’s Food Pantry. She said he recycles tons of cardboard and helps with many other activites.
  • Greg Rose, Dean of Ohio State Marion, who Carbetta said personally took the initiative to write and win a grant that purchased new recycling containers for the college campus.
  • Dan Sheridan, of the Marion County Parks District, who Carbetta said has worked hard to establish and grow the Tallgrass Trail, a bike path, and who, as a pharmacist, helps to organize the prescription drug take back days.
  • Carrie Newton who Carbetta said volunteers her time and cooking skills for numerous activities throughout the year. Newton also hosts a regular “zero waste” dinner for the community.

There are several events still upcoming to celebrate Earth Day in Marion County. You can find more details on these events by clicking here.
