The unemployment rate for Marion County dipped a half percent in April 2012 to 7.9 percent down from 8.4 percent in March. The rate is at its lowest point since it stood at 7.7 percent in November 2008. A month later, the rate jumped to double digits where it remained for 28 months and reached a high of 12.4 percent.
While the decreasing unemployment rate for the State of Ohio has been due, in part, to fewer people actively looking for work, in Marion County the decrease is due to more people attaining employment. For the past four months, the available workforce in Marion County has been 29,500, but the unemployment rate has still steadily decreased from 9.5 percent in January.
When you compare the current rate to that of November 2008, although, the available local workforce has decreased fairly dramatically from 32,200, or a reduction of 2,700 people.
The official numbers from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show 2,300 in Marion County are currently looking for work.
Ohio's statewide unemployment rate was 7.4 percent in April, down from 7.5 percent in March. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment fell 3,400 over the month, from the revised 5,141,300 in March to 5,137,900 in April.
The U.S. unemployment rate for April was 8.1 percent, down from 8.2 percent in March and down from 9.0 percent in April 2011.
