Council Committee Approves Income Tax for Gambling Winnings

The Marion City Council Finance Committee Tuesday approved adding wording to the City’s income tax rules. The change would cause city income tax to be assessed on winnings from games of chance, including from casinos, lotteries, and/or bingo.

Mayor Scott Schertzer told the committee member that winners already must pay taxes on these winnings to the federal government and the State of Ohio. In addition he said many other local communities already have similar rules so Marion would not be unique.

The Finance Committee approved the change 3-0. The full City Council will discuss the proposal at their next meeting on Monday, June 25.
