In response to storms of June 29th, the Marion County Chapter of the American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter and cooling station at the Chapter located at 1849 Summerset Dr. in Marion. The shelter and cooling station opened at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and will remain open until further notice. Persons wishing to use the facility are asked to call the Chapter prior to arriving at 740-725-9141.
Trained volunteers from the Chapter’s Disaster Action Team will be at the location to assist individuals and families affected by the storms. Besides offering a place to get in out of the weather, the Red Cross will have cots, blankets, snacks and personal care items at the facility.
Red Cross disaster assistance is offered without charge to those in need. Persons wishing to stay in the shelter should bring identification, emergency phone numbers, and any necessary prescription medications or medical supplies, such as portable oxygen. Each person should also bring his or her own bed pillow and personal hygiene items if possible. Because of health and safety concerns, pets cannot accompany their owners in the shelter.
Persons in the community who wish to get involved are encouraged to contact the Red Cross at 740-725-9141 to discuss current needs and the best ways to help.
Downed trees and utility lines in the area may cause road and street closures, as well as unmarked hazards. The Red Cross urges motorists to observe all signs and barricades.
If you wish to verify that the shelter is currently open, or if you need additional information or assistance, contact the Marion County Red Cross at 740-725-9141.
