The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says an unidentified youth offender escaped the North Central Ohio Rehabilitation Center, 1440 Mt. Vernon Avenue, on July 7, 2012 at approximately 4:06pm. He was arrested a short time later with the help of an alert witness.
Officials say the 14 year old youth was visiting with family in an unsecured portion of the building and was about to be escorted back to a secure area when he ran out a door. The youth ran to his mother’s vehicle which then left the area. A witness to this event contacted the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and followed the vehicle while providing their direction of travel.
At approximately 4:10pm, deputies intercepted the vehicle in the area of Pole Lane Road and East Fairground Street and the youth was taken back into custody without incident.
The youth and his mother were questioned at the sheriff’s office and then the youth was transported to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.
This incident is still under investigation and this case will be forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for review of criminal charges against the youth and his mother once the investigation is completed.
