On September 4, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. in the Health Technology Center auditorium of Marion Technical College, Vice Admiral James “Phil” Wisecup of the United States Navy will be visiting the Marion campus as part of the Navy 50/50 project. As part of the 50/50 program, 50 Navy leaders will visit 50 cities across the United States to meet with corporate executives, civic leaders, government officials, non-profit executive directors, interested community members, college faculty, administrators, and students.
The Vice Admiral will be joined by Ronald Meade, Manager of Opportunity Marion; John McClure, Veteran Program Manager of Region 6; Lisa Eichelberger, Veteran Representative; a representative from Marion Technical College; and W. Robert Midden, Director, Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education who will be discussing opportunities for veterans and the STEM program.
MTC says the discussion will focus on STEM careers because of the great need for this skillset in the community along with the ability veterans have to fill the need due to their military training.
“Studies show that the U.S. doesn’t have enough students who are interested in pursuing the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) degrees that are so essential to achieving success in the future,” Glenn Sircy, APR, Navy Office Of Community Outreach (NAVCO) had this to say about the need for STEM education. “This shortage of STEM-educated students presents our nation with a massive challenge, and a strong American defense requires more graduates with stronger STEM skills.”
Sircy adds that Vice Admiral Wisecup’s visit to Marion will help build on the United States Navy’s efforts to increase Americans’ understanding of the Navy’s mission, capabilities, and relevance to national security.
